for valentine's day i thought i would post one of the most beautiful weddings i have ever attended.
it was rustic.
it was intimate.
and it was for some people we absolutely adore.

thanks to Allyssa from Breakfast at The Zemke's for this valentine's day treat.

Our wedding turned out just as lovely as I'd imagined. The best part about it was that we worked together in creating each element so that it was our own. We had the ceremony up a beautiful canyon in a small clearing by the river. It was so green and peaceful. A great thing about our wedding is we didn't have a very large budget so it forced us to get creative which meant we had to create a lot of the little details ourselves.

Some of our favorite handmade elements are:

The Pinata. Instead of parting favors we had a pinata. The kids loved it and we enjoyed making it.
The bouquets. My bouquet was made from vintage brooches. My bridesmaids/centerpiece flowers were made from tea dyed fabric.
We made signs from old rustic windows.
Instead of a guest book, we provided vintage post cards in which each guest would sign and then slip into a mailbox.
Our cake stands were made from logs that we'd found.
My dress was reconstructed by a neighbor who did an outstanding job.
We even designed and printed our own invitations, made to look like a vintage telegram

It was a wonderful day that I'll never forget. We put so much love and effort into our wedding and it turned out beautiful. But the best part of it all was I got to marry my best friend, and we will continue to create and put love into everything we do.

after a much needed weekend the bishop family is feeling good over here.
i spoke with my mom.
she called concerning a few honest blog posts.
i assured her nothing was wrong other than she has a really fiery daughter.
she just laughed and said, "i think that's what i love the most about you."
i am guaranteed one women's admiration.
i am fiery though.
real fiery.

so how did we go about the mend?

gave each other time
gave a little visit to the lds temple (so peaceful, much needed)
watched Mike Rowe on QVC. hilarious. here is our favorite.
over ate at Chili's. not smart.
hung out with good company
played a lot with the little. he always makes things better.
i also did a lot of retail therapy. therapy via www for we are poor. have to start saving for when handsome goes off to the big uni. i will get over it.

dear mr. patient with me,

so this week wasn't my most favorite week ever.
definitely wasn't yours.
but it is turning out a lot better than we could hope.
i feel we were in this music video most of the week.
you are the cat.
that's how it goes sometimes.
i do want to tell you i am feeling better about things.
i hope you can bare with me.
i also loved when we did a duet to this bad boy.

in happier and more exciting news...

CONGRATULATIONS on getting accepted to Neumont.
i know who worked really hard to get there.
it was really fun to watch you open the acceptance letter.
you had an excited face on.
i am glad you will get to go to school for something you love.
i am excited to have the next two and half years planned out for us.
we maybe won't see each other all the time, but it will be ok.
maybe it's what we need!

marriage is a funny thing.
i will be the first to tell you that our marriage isn't always roses.
some of these bloggers i read about seem like they have the most romantic, beautiful, fairy tale relationships.
what is their secret?

i look at my relationship with blake and of course i want the perfect marriage.
i want to have what my parents have, but without all the years in between.
my mother will laugh when she reads that.
but they get it.
i know they get it.
i imagine my life being more like this
who doesn't want to always be singing and have illustrated birds come in and help make pancakes?
but the reality is, we are human.
each of us have our own faults that can be completely irritating.

we fight.
it's true.
about really dumb things.
most of the time we fight because i am completely exhausted, or hungry.
i can not be tired or hungry and have a logical, rational conversation.

each day i have to reevaluate how i am contributing to the relationship and how i can change to become better for myself, better for, blake, and now for this little one.
it's totally frustrating.
but it's necessary for our relationship to last.
a lot of bloggers have posted about Lauren Fleishman's Art Book Project/ love ever after

it's all about couples in new york that have been married for over fifty years.
it's very motivating if not absolutely adorable.

i guess i can let go of my expectation of illustrated birds, mice that make me dresses, and magic carpets that become a conduit to everlasting love.

i want real love that is built over time.
where change, forgiveness, service, and kindness strengthen it.

i also came across this little gem and really felt the pull of improvement around my neck.
i really need to focus on being my best self for my best guy.
it is really easy to point out your spouses flaws, but i have learned that most of my issues are because of me.
that is so annoying.
i will get it though.
sooner rather than later.
i pray i can be more teachable.

in the bishop household we have one rule.
well, we actually have a lot of rules, but this is a big one.
"jac can not be in charge of plants."
i took it really hard at first.
i was defiant, and obstinate.
but eventually i had to come to the realization that i just simply did not have a green thumb.

lucky for you, there are some who have the same problem.

did your weekend fly by as fast as ours did?

holy smokes!

we had the perfect weekend.

relaxed in park city, hung out with friends, and went to the most darling super bowl party.

way to go giants.

not only was it a great weekend, it was also a busy week.

lots to do for organizing.

i have a client in alpine that needed her kitchen pantry done.

she sent me these photos.

is it weird that these pictures make me so excited?
probably.

i got to work.
the hardest part about organizing is purging the spot.
cleaning it, and prepping for new move ins.
that doesn't mean you throw everything away.
it just means that the spot needs to be completely empty in order for things to be put back in better order.
this house was a big deal, but SO FUN!

purging, cleaning, arranging.

the finished product makes me so happy.

categorized shelves help with unloading groceries and cooking. SO much easier.
big baskets are used to store onions, potatoes, and bulk items.

we moved her dishes that were in a side cabinet in the main kitchen to the funky diagonal shelving.
this enables everyone to see all the dishes and not wonder what food is tucked deep.
her baking goods were put in cute wire baskets so she could pull them out all in one container.
one shelf was used for her appliances that are daily or weekly used.
the hidden shelving to the right help all paper and plastic goods that no one needs to see, but need to be easily accessible.

the "quick foods" were placed besides the fridge so her kids can have a good grab and go spot.
i usually put cereals in their own bins, but this family goes through cereal so quickly that it wasn't something my client wanted to do.
and that's cool.

appliances she rarely gets to were placed on the top of the pantry in order so she can see what she has instead of having them buried in dark places.

our give-away pile.

i rarely throw everything out.

we just find better places for things.

the swan prince

as of late the little has been completely obsessed with animals.
i mean, really, truly, obsessed.
he sees anything with a tail and he full on freaks out.
met these birds.
nikson was honking the whole weekend.
loved them.

swans are actually quite rude.
snap snap.
all the time.

it was all we could do to keep him from flipping over the fence and going swimming.

he is such a tiny little squirt!

this also has become a daily to-do for father and son.

now although i won't even kind of consider a dog, my heart was stolen by these black beauties.
check out those beaks!
i am now trying to figure out where we could put a pond in the back.
black swans are way more friendly than white ones.
these guys would greet us every time we walked up to the pond.

sucker for design

anyone who knows me, knows i am a design fanatic.
there is something about a well-designed room that excites me.
i have been collecting images from homes i admire for years now in hopes that one day we get to build our dream home.
i even go to the extent of contacting architects, builders, photographers, and designers.
yes, it's that bad.
thank heavens for pinterest for now i can have all my images in a consolidated spot.
at first i thought the attraction i had was weird, but i am learning that more and more people have the same addiction.
take my friend nora, from round-circles.
her eye for design is simple and so classy.
she introduced me to a new design blog to love, La maison d'Anna G.
Here are some of the images i am completely in love with.

i love incorporated lots of textures and materials.
the wooden apples and the glossy cabinet call to me.

spindle is everywhere right now and i am obsessed.

one. mom's feelings.

being the mother to this little man has been the most rewarding experience.
i can not believe it has been a year.
i have my hands in a lot of buckets right now, trying to manage many ventures.
i have found that my greatest happiness and joy has come from my sweet connection with this little one.
he has been such a huge blessing in our lives.
blake and i were really nervous about having a baby so early in our marriage.
that surprise took nine months to be accepted.
as soon as he came, things changed.
for our own relationship and the relationship we have with God.
He knew that we needed this special soul.

i understand how every mother in the world can think their own child is the best.
it is because they get to spend moments with them that no one else does.
i love looking threw my rear view mirror and seeing his legs bouncing to the beat of good music.
i love that he laughs when i dance crazy during lunch or when we just lay in bed playing "tickle tickle".
he is smart.
he knows when dad is home because he can hear the MINI pull up the driveway.
he makes animal noises that are cool like elephant, tiger, and peacock.
i laugh that he is now tall enough to reach for things he used to not even try for.
he used to barely peer over his toy box and now half his body disappears into the toys.
he bounces every time music comes on.
i love that.
i love all sixteen pounds of him.
even though he is little, he is big.
bigger than i think we realize.
i am lucky to be his mom.

we asked him, "who is the cutest boy?"
he raised both hands.
a couple college chicks were watching.
they fell in love.

we got to spend the weekend in st. george, utah with some of our best friends.

it was much needed time away.

How do you say I love you?

The rule at our house is that each holiday gets to be celebrated without getting interrupted by the next holiday. For example, we decorate for Thanksgiving all the way up until Black Friday. While all of you are racing through the malls to get the best deals, I am at home taking down the browns and creams and getting ready for some good old fashioned Christmas decorating. Once the holiday passes, it's free game. Now that Nikson's birthday has been given adequate attention, we can start thinking about Valentine's Day.
As most of you may know, I married someone that thinks Valentine's Day is a total joke. Aren't I lucky?! He really hates anything that has been commercialized. If I want Valentine's Day we will have to move to the Amazon where there is no access to the world. Bon Voyage! I did have a nice childhood though, my mom was really great about teaching us the importance of showing love to each other and I am determined to help my children see the beauty in showing love to those that come into their lives. Little notes are fun and can mean the world to family and friends. Mr. Bishop will soften up. You should see him with Nikson. Slowly melting. As for me and my lack of, I have resorted to others to show the love...not like that sillies, like really cute cards and printables!

TinyPrints is no exception. They have every holiday covered, even Valentine's Day with the absolute sweetest designs and brightest colors. I loved celebrating Valentine's Day at school because it was the only time you could get away with giving the cutest boy the cutest valentine and him not really get it.

Baby's First Birthday

Is it really true?
Do we really have a one year old?

This past weekend we celebrated Nikson's first birthday in style.
Thanks to some very sweet friends who talked mama into having a party.
Blake and I kept laughing because we didn't really know what to do.
You feel a little silly throwing a party for someone who can't even tell you what they want!
But it turned out quite lovely.

Nikson had his very own gluten free, vegan cake and cupcakes compliments of the very best City Cakes and Cafe
Their food is fabulous and totally Nikson friendly.
It also happens to be a hop, skip, and a jump down the street form us so that is great.
Especially since we got hammered with snow.

I used newspaper for our theme because I saw this party on Project Nursery.
It was super inexpensive aka free and really gave this treat table some class.

"I don't know how I feel about this."
"What is on my head?"
"Hello?"

"You guys are making me nervous."
"All this singing is giving me stage fright."

"Mom do I have to in front of all these people?"

"Maybe just a little bit."

That'a boy.
It was a really great night.
We feel really blessed to have people in our lives that love the little as much as we do.
Well, maybe not as much, but pretty darn close!

Blake wants a dog.

I, on the other hand, do not.
Puppies are cute.
Dogs are fine.
But I am a no pet fur/hair/fuzz person.
I particularly don't love their smell, way of communication, or desire to be in my bed.

So I told Blake if he wants a pet, we can have a fox.
He will live outside.
I will make him a cozy bed to sleep in when he would like to.
Maybe an old wine barrel with a thick flannel blanket.
And I will leave our scrapes for him to munch.
We will keep our distance, but know there is mutual respect.

Also- saw a similar picture on pinterest and thought it would be fun to have.
It has been the bearer of all sorts of love notes.
Once Blake wrote, "I love you because you're clumsy." And then drew the girl falling off the swing.
So endearing.

Our little man is going to be one soon.
I haven't quite gotten used to the idea yet.
He is growing up so fast I can hardly keep up with him.
He learned this little trick by watching his mama do it with some cousins.

I didn't even know he was paying attention.
It scares me how much babies know what is going on.
He also picked this one up and surprised us both.
Don't you just love family documentation?

An Organized Office

Part of my Colorado trip was back to a client's home to start on their office.
Each trip we organize room by room.
And each trip I need to get better about documenting. Sorry for the iPhone shots again.
This trip was really nice because Nikson got to play with his cousins while I got to work.
Everyone's a winner!
One thing that I specifically love about my job is being able to teach people how to store their important goods, while getting rid of a lot of bulk and trash.
This sweet family has three darling girls that love crafts, kits, and school supplies so we had to really determine how many crayons and markers were enough to survive!
We compromised and found a system that worked great for them.

Matching bins in IKEA's Expedit Storage System really turned the chaotic office into a well-oiled machine.
Instead of hiding everything like the father wanted, we made it easily accessible, but well sorted for mom.
Artwork was hung instead of hidden in bins.
Each daughter had her own bin of supplies.
Empty picture frames were filled and displayed.

The closet was turned into a massive storage unit where the kids and parents had access to everything that was previously just floating around the office.
Pictures were already put into bins and the girl's art kits were consolidated into specific spots.
We got rid of bookcases, tables, bins, and shelves, replacing everything with the Expedit units.
I left feeling quite satisfied and ready to take on another project.

Wednesday is Pinterest Day

One thing that has kept my relationship with my oh so charming honey from perfect is our inability to focus when given some sort of electronic device that connects us to the www. Most nights you will find us perusing the information highway rather than communicating. It may seem sad to some of you, but I am almost willing to bet that some of you are feeling me.
Blake's drink of choice is a mixture of games, tech blogs, and nerdy comics. I am more of a design blogs, Amazon, and Pinterest girl. (oh, and Instagram.) (oh, and Facebook.) But that is it! I swear.

The dilemma is this...why are we not as exciting as what we see on our phones?
Riddle me that.

You may ask, "Will the defendant plead her cause?"
Most certainly.
I want to be creative! but I just don't have the brain power to make it up on my own.
I do, on the other hand, have the ability to re-create what someone else has made up.
Copy cat.
Copy and paste.
Copy that, Sargent.
I find a lot of joy in recreating spaces, products, and ideas.
Sometimes I add a touch of "me" in there, but let's be honest, I am 100% made up of thousands of other people's ideas.
Thank you world wide web for opening up my ability to "DO."

My evidence?
Homemade Laundry Detergent = $19.37/9-12 months

1 4 lb 12 oz box Borax (2.15 kg or 76 oz) found in the detergent isle

1 4 lb box Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (1.81 kg) found in the cooking isle

1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 55 oz (3 lb 7 oz) found in the detergent isle

3 bars of Fels-naptha soap, found in the detergent isle.

(Microwave each bar separately for two minutes. They will look like this. Let cool completely and then crumble into mixture. Microwaving it allows for the flakes to dissolve easier when in load.)

2 small containers of oxyclean or store brand oxyclean (try to get about 3.5 lbs total (1.58 kg)) found in the detergent isle. (Use the scoop for your loads.)

I found all of this side by side at Walmart.

Mix in a garbage bag and then place in a two gallon container of your choice.

I will have to let you know when I actually run out of the miracle suds, BUT for $20 you can't go wrong. It smells great and so far, my first loads are really clean and fresh smelling.

Questions you may have?

This mix can be used front loaders. Just put a scoop directly in the bin.

Nikson has sensitive skin, and it hasn't irritated him. Very mild.

So you see members of the jury, although I am not spending adequate time communicating with my husband. His clothes are remarkably clean and his bank account still has money in it.
I rest my case.

One Sweet Slice Shower

Over the holidays I was able to throw my sweet sister-in-law a baby shower for baby number two.
This shower was really fun, especially because it was celebrating a girl for Brooklyn.
She has been dying for a cute girl baby to dress up with head bands, bows, and tutus.
Watch out world, Baby Girl Gulbranson will be a heart breaker.

I opted for a simple, yet totally girly cupcake shower at One Sweet Slice in South Jordan.
I loved the way everything turned out.
The cupcakes were delicious and absolutely DARLING.
The shop was ultra shabby chic.
And we could not have asked for a sweeter party.

Cake Pops!

Nikson was trying to win over party attendees.
He is quite the ham.
I love it.

The new BIG brother.
Kashton just so happens to be the sweetest, most kind, and darling young man.
He is such a fun nephew to be an aunt to and he loves to help with Nikson.
He will be a great older brother.

The mama to be round two scored some sweet girly goods.

Nikson's First Christmas

Christmas was absolutely lovely this year.
We got to spend most of the week with my brother and sister-in-law, their six daughters, and their brand new baby...BOY!
Everyone was home except for Natalie and her family, and my parents.

Our to-do's:
-work for a client. (pictures to come.)
-drive through quite a large snow storm. (Thanks Blake for taking one for the team)
-sledding and snow forts.
-go see a movie sans the little (Sherlock Holmes:Game of Shadows=Amazing)
-eat delicious food.

Christmas is probably my most favorite time of the year.
Mostly because it is a time of serious spiritual reflection and gratitude for me.
I could not be a more blessed woman to have such great friends, a wonderful family, and more specifically, two guys that make my heart melt.
I am a happy lady right now.
Even when life gets difficult, I am constantly reminded of my blessings and the hand of the Lord in my life.
My post today is some inspiration I always read during Christmas and try to keep in my heart all year long.

Christmas Lights. There's just something about the lights around the holidays that gets me every year. One of my favorite things is driving past homes and seeing their lit up Christmas trees in the windows, it makes me smile. I live in Salt Lake City and I'm sure every person that lives in the valley has the same tradition as me of going to the Salt Lake LDS Temple Square to see the Christmas lights. It is an amazing sight to see and it never gets old, every year it's just as astonishing and beautiful as the last.

I don't know if you have been to Disneyland during the holidays, but boy do they really know how to put on a show! When I was young we took a family trip to Disneyland in late November. I was so excited because it had been a few years since I had been there and I was so ready to ride all the rides and visit with all the Disney characters. The first day we were there we did just that and I remember having the time of my life. But the magic didn't happen until the sun went down. All the Christmas lights turned on, the giant tree on main street lit up and my little eyes were as wide as they could be. I had never seen anything so miraculous. I will never forget that Christmas and the beautiful lights at the Happiest Place on Earth.

It only happens for a few weeks out of the year but I have to say it's my most favorite time. There's nothing quite like seeing all the lights that adorn everyone's homes and yards. Clark from Christmas Vacation got it right. "Is your house on fire Clark?" "No Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights."

Holiday Traditions- Old & New

Hi, I'm Ellie from Rose is a Rose (www.roseisarosedesigns4you.blogspot.com). Jac has kindly invited me here to share some holiday traditions with you.

Christmas has always been a time of the year with family and a house filled with love. Our home is even more full of love with our 2 y/o boy and another boy expected in the next 6 weeks. I'm itching to create so many wonderful memories with my boys and can't wait to incorporate some old AND new traditions! I thought I'd share what we do in our home and maybe one of things you'll incorporate into your family's special Christmas time traditions this year or the next.

And YES, these are all food related in some way...I'm 34 weeks pregnant--what do you expect?!!

1. Homemade Sugar Cookies and Icing

I can't remember a year where I didn't join my mom in the kitchen and bake sugar cookies followed by hours of decorating with icing and sprinkles. These are moments frozen in time that no one can take away from me. Here is the stand by recipe (simple and yummy) and our secret icing recipe (ha!)

Traditional Sugar Cookies from Betty Crocker

3/4 cup shortening (part butter or margarine softened)

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla or 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
2 eggs

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and flavoring. Blend in flour, baking powder and salt. Cover: chill for at least 1 hour.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into desired shapes (This is one of the best parts!! We had LOADS to choose from as kids and my mom always let us pick!) Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until very light brown.

ICING:

For the icing we just had powdered sugar and added milk to it (a teaspoon at a time, stirring until you get the right consistency). We always had 4-6 bowls of icing and then add our food colorings to it for LOTS of options. Sprinkles and red hots are also great additions.

2. Kid's Tree Garland {NEW}

I know this is nothing new to most people, or really that fancy or crafty for that matter. However, I've always wanted to have garland on my tree that may not normally meet my home decor standard, but would be made with love and by the hands of my children. This year I got out some twine (left over from another project), and got out some Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios and Apple Dapples (green only) and away we went. My little guy was very happy...he normally only has access to Kashi cereal or plain cheerios!!

3. Elf Treats {NEW}

I saw this fantastic idea here (http://unconfidentialcook.com/2009/04/08/emmas-tiny-treats/). We are going to be putting out treats for Santa's Elves this year too along with the Santa plate and cookies we usually leave out. You can use a pill box or match box to put your's in, or you can be like me and make your own (MUCH BIGGER) box.

I made some Elf Donuts

And will add these Peanut Butter Thumbprint MINI cookies as well to this box.

Anyone have any other mini treat ideas for Santa's Elves?

Want to come up with a few more treats to add to the box!

4. Cinnamon Roll Giving {NEW}

Instead of giving cookie plates to friends and neighbors, this year I am going to be making trays of YUMMY Cinnamon Rolls AHEAD of time!! (http://www.kingarthurflour.com/blog/2010/12/10/freeze-cinnamon-buns-in-20-minutes/ ). This link tells you exactly how to make them ahead of time with best results! I will be using disposable foil baking/cooking containers and include a nice fun and festive label on top with baking instructions and quick recipe for the glaze/icing.

I will deliver these a week before Christmas (Don't you wish you were MY neighbor?). They can choose to keep them frozen until Christmas Eve, Christmas morning or any other day for that matter! What a great gift to give someone you care about--the gift of taking ONE thing off their to-do list. We always like to have special pastries/treats for breakfast around the holidays and especially when you are the host of all the guests. This way it is one less thing they have to plan and worry about! Besides, don't we all get PLENTY of cookies?

Recently, Tyler and I attempted to take Christmas pictures.
I say attempted because we failed, miserably, and now have what may be 1,000 bad photos in a row of us wearing red and white striped matching pajamas (thanks, grandma!).
About an hour into the disaster, we decided to abort the mission and try again when we weren’t dressed like idiots, relying on the instincts of my camera’s self-timer to capture the right moment. Live and learn, right?
Tyler and I have been married for six months, which makes this our first Christmas as a married couple. We are loving that family traditions like sending Christmas cards are now ours to uphold/attempt to uphold/abandon at our convenience.

Christmas just ain’t whatit used to be. The older I get, the morethe magic fades and I miss the days when my sister and I would stay up allnight giddy with anticipation wondering what Santa would bring us.

I remember one Christmas, Ireally really wanted this charm bracelet I had seen in a catalog. I bugged my mom relentlessly and put it onthe top of my Christmas list to Santa.

I woke up that Christmasmorning bursting with excitement and my sister, brother and I rushed downstairsto find our gifts and we waited impatiently for our parents to wake. It felt like magic the moment I ripped openthe wrapping paper and saw the shiny gold charm bracelet that I had wanted sobadly. I remember feeling so incrediblyhappy.

I have long outgrown the charmbracelet I had once wanted so badly. It’snow dingy and a couple of charms are missing, but after all of these years,it’s still one of my most treasured possessions. It reminds me of this incredibly magicalmoment where I believed that dreams could come true.

It makes me miss being akid. I miss the excitement of Christmas. I miss ripping wrapping paper off and screaming with delight. Although appreciative, I’m slow to open giftcards and cash enclosed in generic greeting cards, knowing the magic ofChristmas is definitely not hiding inside.

I am so excited about this month's feature.
It is the most exciting event yet on The Bishop's Wife and I want to thank everyone who has participated.

Everyday is something different.

Today's guest post is Jennifer of 603 Home.

What I love most about Christmas is tradition. My favorite Christmas tradition from when I was a little girl, was the annual trip to choose the family Christmas tree. Every year our whole family would bundle up in our coats and gloves on a crisp, chilly, sunshiny California afternoon in December, and go to the Christmas tree farm. I looked forward to it every year. It seemed so miraculous that we could choose any tree we wanted, still growing from the ground, and take it home to decorate it. I thought our tree was always so beautiful when we were finished hanging the last of the ornaments and lights. It was a nice way for our family to spend time together celebrating the holiday season. I remember wishing it could be Christmas time all year long.

I believe that's when my love for decorating my home for the holidays began. The fond memories of our annual trip to the tree farm and our beloved Christmas tree are always with me when I create my holiday pillows. I started to make them for others because I want people to enjoy making their homes beautiful and festive this time of year as much as I do. I love making them and I hope you enjoy them and this holiday season.

Glimpses of my life through the iPhone

Blake and I have an ongoing arguement about the amount of time I spend on my phone... versus the amount of undivided attention I give to him.
Truth is, I have a problem.
But in my defense, that thing is
my camera,
my video camera,
my internet (you know, when I am out and about or in bed),
my communication with adults,
my source of entertainment,
my only source of "gaming"
and my phone, obviously.
I also have an obsession with instagram.
yep, totally unprofessional, filtered, pictures of my life.
and everyone else in my life.
With that being said...
here are a few for your little peepers.

The stockings are hung on our bookcase from Ikea with care.
One day I will have a real mantel
and it will be beautiful.

Candy jars.
Boxwood wreath.
Christmas just isn't the same without them.

And these two little sweeties found their way into my home.
Sparkley.

I also believe no home is complete without a "little" like him.
Ten months is a really fun and darling age.
I kind of just want to pause life and just enjoy this stage a little longer.

Ever since we found out Nikson has massive food allergies, our refrigerator has been stocked a little differently than normal. I am still breastfeeding the wee one so i have to be pretty careful and have had to change a lot of what we eat.

here is an example of a normal day in the bishop home.
BREAKFAST:
2 of Van's frozen wheat free, dairy free, egg free waffle.
a turkey sausage patty
SNACK:
hummus and sliced veggies
Rice crackers
LUNCH:
Turkey Sandwich, no cheese, no mayo, stocked with veggies and Rudy's Gluten Free Bread Slices
Rice Tortilla Chips (baked at home) and Salsa
SNACK:
Cinnamon Chex with Rice Milk (I could eat them all day long)

DINNER:
Chicken and Sun Dried Tomatoes with Brown Rice Pasta
Salad
Dessert:
another bowl of Cinnamon Chex:)

Blake has been really awesome about eating what is being cooked. Sometimes the meal is easy to substitute in Nikson friendly foods that we just make it and do so. I feel really good and healthy, but more importantly, he isn't itching himself to tears and hasn't broken out in a massive, painful rash. Thank heavens! Sometimes we just have to make the right kind of sacrifices. He is worth it though.

yesterday the boy and i went to see the best pediatrician in Utah for Nikson's nine month check up.
the doctor told us a couple things...
his vitals. fifteen pounds and twenty eight inches.
one percentile for weight
fortieth for height
although he is a teeny tiny little, dr. wirkus added,
"you also have the most charming little boy."

Over the weekend it was brought to my attention by a very handsome, dapper, sophisticated, charming, but painfully frank husband that our home is not as he would have it.
GASP!
I repeat, he is not happy with our humble abode. The structure and frame is quite to his liking, but the interior trinkets have long over stayed their welcome and he would like me to cut down on my decorating habits.
DOUBLE GASP!
It was like a stab to my heart.
I was shocked, appalled, and quite frankly devastated that all my time and attention has amounted to an unhappy husband.
Some friends were around to witness the awful scene and some were quick to my rescue in arguing the point that a house is not a home unless there are trinkets involved.
Thank you Allie for understanding me, being so stalwart, and having my back girl.

I know my husband has deep rooted resentment toward decorating.
To him decorating is spelled M.O.N.E.Y.
(which we have very little of for spending on frivolous home accessorizing loot.)
I blame no one for his problem.
He has to fight his own demons.

I did a little test to try and ease the burden for him.
We had some other friends over and we were discussing the art of thrifty and the man started in with his trinket talk.
It started to get hot. (when I say hot, I mean, friendly fire.)
"Point to anything in this room and ask me how much I spent on it."
Those of you that know me read that last statement with some pretty thick sass.
Very thick indeed.
The pointing began, one dollar, five dollars, two dollars and fifty cents, given to me, given to me, free, found, given to me, clearance, designer's discount, etc.
My responses never exceeded the twenty dollar amount until we started getting to the sofa and chair.
The result?
Drum roll please...
Our living room/family room (including our Zgallerie sofa that I got for a SCREAMING deal mind you and all of my little trinkets, pictures, frames, and crafts) amounted to a total of $350.

Not one soul can even find a sofa...
that is as big and as comfortable for $350!
(that is an exaggeration of course, but I am totally in the zone right now. trying to make a point.)

So the reason for my post is very simple.
I want to make it known, here and now, that when get the opportunity and are blessed to own our own home we will have a very different look than what you have seen before.

Eclectic yet minimalistic.

If my father heard me utter those words he would be so disappointed. it is truly how i feel though. i understand that William Bradford was a big turkey guy and felt very grateful, but we are constantly reminded to be thankful all the time and we should be all year long. so lets skip the 7,000 calorie meal and get on with decking our halls and wishing that people have days that are merry and bright. i can not wait to get my thanksgiving decor down and get Christmas up! I guess having a little one makes holidays seem so much more exciting.

You can bet you will be seeing a table like this at my house this year.

Has anyone heard this album yet? Any Christmas music junkies out there? It is AMAZING! The Buble has got amazing talent. Totally nostalgic and smooth.

business trip

This past week went by like a whirlwind. Nikson and I flew to Colorado on a business trip for The Perfect Housewife! It was so much fun and a lot of work. So much that I am going back once a month to get this client on track. I will apologize for the poor photo quality. I was finally able to talk them into letting me take pictures and I had to do it with my phone. my old phone (Blake, hint hint). I promise my next projects with be properly documented Anyway, needless to say, I felt really excited about what we did and how much we got done. Two days of only the kitchen. It was SO FUN!! The best part was helping this client realize they can organize, which doesn't mean throwing everything away!

we put everything in bins and saved a lot of space. Even the dish cabinets and drawers were organized so that unknown space was cleared and there was room to grow. It is amazing to see people's eyes when they see what they actually use and how to use it at it's best. It feels really good to see these transformations.

yesterday was one of those days that i questioned my ability to be a good mom.

i tried all sorts of things to help my fussy baby not be fussy.

we played in the leaves.

lasted five minutes.

he ate TONS of food by himself.

played in the tub.

another five minutes.

an hour before normal bedtime we said goodnight to the world.
whoa.
i felt exhausted.
there is something about the cranky mccrankster that really drained me today.

Today I read the story of Baby Ronan. The story left me feeling a bit vulnerable and disconcerted. As a mother, it also gave me some clarity and opened up my eternal perspective lens a bit wider. It is stories like Ronan's, or this, or this, or like Luke, who was lucky enough to survive, that have been teaching me more about the role of a parent than any parenting book will ever do. Although my heart aches for these sweet families, I am officially changed as a mother.
It is interesting that so many people are consumed by the success' of life. Especially when success has to do with being a good parent and vaulting your children into the skies of fortune. From birth, we begin to measure the development of our children in hopes that each measurement has met some unwritten expectation. An expectation with strings so invisible that some may not even realize how in control of us they may be.
My thoughts were provoked by a discussion I had with Blake about not pushing Nikson into certain developments, but letting him enjoy each step of the ride. We are pretty calm parents. Never stressing about Nikson eating apples before spinach, or if he should be growing teeth at four months. Right now he "should be crawling", but that is the last thing I want him to do. When he is motivated enough, he will probably just skip crawling altogether. But that opens up a whole new can of expectations. Will that cause him to be a bad reader? Or influence his choices of which college to attend? Most likely not.I think the only measurement that will truly invite our children to be successful, however that is defined by them, is through the measurement of the love we give them while we have them.
This article brought on a whole new meaning of love for me. Loving these little humans in the moments we have them. Nothing is certain. At least nothing during our human experience.
What a blessing the internet is that it enables us to connect with real people who open their hearts to the world. It is so vulnerable and scary and yet those who share strengthen others. I suppose that is why I choose to let so many people into my personal life. I write because it feels good, but some read because they need it.

Let me introduce you to Blondie.

(Sorry this pic was taken under the carport so the shadows are all but flattering)

She has been a great dining companion since we moved into the little cottage. But she has been in desperate need of a makeover. I have been playing around with some ideas and searching Pinterest for some serious inspiration. That's how Clinton and Stacy do it so well right? I finally committed. I busted out Ryobi and found the finishing product more than fabulous, but not after I was feeling sick, betrayed, and worried.
I thought the old girl would just transition smoothly, but after the first hour of sanding I realized I had taken on a project that was more than I bargained for.
I sanded for two and half hours and after I finished I felt a bit dizzy and wobbly. It was like I had permabration from the sander. I started the stain after a quick dust off and my stomach turned.
IT LOOKED TERRIBLE!

I just kept thinking, oh no! what have i done?
Blake tried to make it not so painful by saying "she probably won't look so bad when she dries."
I kept staining. For four more days! Yeah, I know. I had a specific look and I just wasn't getting it. So I would stain, let dry overnight, then stain again. Finally by day four I felt the color was what I wanted. The only problem remained was that the stain was not setting and I was not about to get any poly-urethane. I really dislike the look of it. So my amazing neighbor Erin suggested Tung oil. (What The????) Whatever it was, it did the trick. Two coats of the miracle sealer and viola...a makeover to be confident about.This project took about all the patience I could muster, which was near painful. Can you imagine me waiting almost a week to get this back in my kitchen? It was a total sacrifice.

Finally embracing her age with true class. I used an ebony stain and sealed it with Tung oil. I also dipped her legs in a very soft gray (almost white). It just makes the kitchen feel a bit more finished and I love how the top turned out. It is a really smooth looking gray, almost like Restoration Hardware style.

Look at that girl.
Now tomorrow I will get Blondie's little sister stools done and I will be a happy camper...errrr...
eater, I mean.

nine months

It is hard to believe that nine months is already here. I feel so blessed to have been given the opportunity to be the mother of this amazing soul.

Nikson has been a total delight to raise and everyday is better. It is amazing how his little personality is actually not quite so little.

He has things he likes, things that make him laugh, and ways of getting things accomplished.

He thinks crawling is for the worms and decided that rolling to get around is his mode of transportation. Most of the time I find him under my bed or wedge up against something that is too big to move.

He has five teeth, all of which came right at seven months and have not quit yet. Number six is slowly making it's descent.

He loves being outside, whether it's early in the morning or late at night. It's almost like he just wants some fresh air.

He could lay under our tress and stare at the sky forever.

He taught himself how to give high fives, wave hello and goodbye, says "Mama" all day long. Sometimes he will humor Blake with an occasional "DaDa".

I think he knows Blake wants him to do it, so he holds off.

Blake will kindly remind him that "Dada" was his first words and then politely ask him to say it and Nikson will give him a coy smile and then burrow into my shoulder.

It's actually quite darling.

Sometimes when I watch my baby sleep or playing by himself I feel really overwhelmed.

I think to myself, "Why would God entrust us with such a noble soul?"

It really makes me think about how I live my life and how I respond to situations.

Raising a baby is not easy and I have definitely had my moments, but raising Nikson is the ultimate pleasure. There is nothing quite like knowing your child loves you more than anything.

Some people think babies are too little to know anything, but they would be wrong.

This little man knows his parents and how to make them happy.

I love it.

The Patch

Every year we go to Schmidt's Pumpkin Patch to pick out the "most perfect pumpkins". We walk down the aisle and I ask Blake what he thinks about certain candidates. He replies with an enthusiastic, "It looks like a pumpkin to me." I roll my eyes and keep searching. This year I had some extra help. I would show Nikson certain pumpkins and he would kick his legs and flap his arms. I took that as a go-ahead and found three perfect pumps.

I also made this banner with the help of my friend Brandi. (I can't cut worth peanuts so she cut and I glued.)

Sleepy Hollow

(waking up)

i have a little mister who happens to love to snuggle with his mom at nights. i also am a mom who LOVES to snuggle with her misters all day. I have absolutely no problem with that. In fact, from the beginning of our relationship we have slept together with the babe. we have never rolled on him or suffocated him. I think i am too aware he is there. but there comes a time in a mother's life when she has got to let reality sink in and she has got to get some rest. i had seen other friend moms encountering the same perplexing difficulty and was encouraged by their triumphs and so i had to make the choice and severe the ties. after four nights of one sad night owl, two closed doors, and a loud heater, i finally can say that this little guy is sleeping through the night. he is finally on a schedule and i really love it. but i will say, with the permission of my bed partner, we sneak him in for family naps still. its just a sacrifice i am unwilling to make.

i have to talk him into it sometimes.

The little and the man are fast asleep in their beds. Boy have I got some goods for you.

I have a dilemma I come across about once a month, but the dilemma gets a little more frequent when October hits. You see, I have married a man who truly believes that decorating for holidays is quite ridiculous. He thinks buying holiday themed things are a waste of money. Although I do tend to agree with the mister to a certain extent, I can't help myself when I see something I really, really, really love. Luckily, I found some little items that will last me more than a holiday.

One thing you may need to know about me is that when it comes to clothes, I am a plain Jane. Not that I like anything drab, I just am highly particular about prints and patterns. Think simple and that's me. I have a huge ridiculous problem with the "puppies on the feet" look, or the "bear ears", or anything that has a Disney or Nickelodeon character on it. I am sorry if that is your thing, but it definitely isn't mine. I really don't even like the "Mom's Biggest Fan" or "Dad's Superstar" stuff that has become so popular. When I found the owl pirate at Gap, the "Trick rrrr Treat is even a stretch, but I gave in. The owls are too rad to pass up.

Now to elaborate on the dilemma I have spoken of, the following story has been dramatized, uh I mean, played down and efficiently told for a greater effect...

One cold Wednesday evening, three days ago to be precise, I decided to add some finishing touches to complete my partially bone chilling and somewhat eerie home for Halloween. I chose Wednesday for it had gotten cold outside, the wind was whistling across our porch, the clouds were low, and dropping random drops of icy rain. It also was an evening, "you know who", would be at school. You see, I try to do these decorating things when Blake isn't home so I can be spared from his snarky remarks. Wednesday was my day and I quickly pulled out the Halloween bin as I watched him drive off to school. With hot chocolate in hand, the baby in his bouncer, and Bing Crosby warmly singing "The Headless Horseman", my witching hour began. But no sooner had it begun than my heart sank as I heard the familiar sound of my husband's super charger engine roll back up to the house. As I was placing the last of my webs, Blake walked up the walkway, "My class got cancelled. Hooray!" I smiled, feeling his excitement, but wondered how long it would last. He ducked under the webs I had strung across the porch and into our cozy cottage. Much to his chagrin, he found I had strung web all over our nicely tidy home. Webs covered the windows, mirrors, and picture frames. ( I admit, it may have gotten a bit out of control, but I was really in the webbing mood.) I winced, wondering what he would say. After what seemed like ages he finally spoke. "We should probably call an exterminator." His eyes were bright and he smirked a bit, "We have a rather large spider problem." I laughed and quickly whipped back, "Your mom has a spider problem." (No offense Cheryl., it's just what we kids like to say nowadays.)

burlap and snores

Sir Nikson and I have been quite busy here at the homestead. Blake is working full-time, going to school full-time, and mowing the lawn full time so we try to fill up those empty moments with some fun things.

I needed something for an open spot in the kitchen and this proved to be the filler. I fell in love with jones design company's woven pin board.
I am not the best at these crafty things, but I love how it turned out.

We painted the back wall, and by we I mean, Blake and Nikson played while Mom hastily tried to finish during conference break. I wanted something that would make the palisades sofa POP! and I think the color did the trick. (Lessey, what do you think?)

We busted out the Halloween bin. It's funny how different houses create different looks. We have been in a different place for every Halloween, and so far, this house is my favorite.

This is also what I have come across in my efforts to do projects. I always wondered when he would fall asleep in the high chair. Early Saturday morning whilst I was preparing breakfast I turned to find my partner had given out on me. So I cook solo. Why is it that the mom never gets to sleep? I think it's because she has to be there to capture the moment. Check out those lashes!

A Six Month Awaited Weekend

Every six month we get the opportunity to watch and listen to the LDS General Conference.

It's my favorite time of the year.

I love snuggling with the family and listening to the messages shared.

It is also fun because you can feel a change in the air.

Not only do I get to be spiritually edified, but it marks the beginning of fall.

A lot of people love spring because it marks the beginning of things.

Fall for me marks the putting off of old things, and a sense of renewal.

The changing of the leaves are brilliant in the Rockies this year.

The air is a little crispier.

And I now can wear cardigans and people don't think I am crazy.

(I wear them all through summer, I know, heat stroke, right?)

Hopefully today I can

get a wall in the house painted,

some bulbs planted,

and then tonight...

caramel apples with my sister.

I love this weekend.

Forget Me Not

This past week not only was incredible for our physical bodies, but my spiritual self was really rejuvenated. A couple that went with us really impressed Blake and I. This family is all about each other. On a number of occasions, I would hear the husband praise his wife on how "awesome" she was and she wasn't even around to hear it. The kids LOVE their parents and have an incredible amount of respect for them and as I watched, it was because the parents respected the kids. As Blake and I drove home, we talked about the things we observed and the incredible life lessons that were learned. Sometimes I forget how much I need to be strengthened on the inside. So many experiences created a sense of renewal in my heart and soul. I missed the Relief Society Broadcast on Saturday so this week I am trying to get it in before conference. One talk has really been on my mind and this morning, I found it has been on some other friends minds as well, so I thought I would share my feelings. Elder Uchtdorf spoke on finding the majesty in the ordinary experiences of life. I think I tend to be one who forgets to rejoice in the bounty of life and I have set a goal to celebrate those moments more. I could be upset that I never get a full night's rest due to a sweet, but very hungry baby, but I am learning to cherish those quiet little moments as I watch him fall back asleep and I get to go back in and resnuggle Blake. Being more grateful, cheerful, and positive is hard, but once I do it, it feels really natural and instinctive. Not only am I trying to be positive about the tiny things, but also positive about myself and the person I am striving to become. I do get frustrated when my actions do not reflect the true feelings of my heart. I do get down on myself and have bad days. I am embarrassed when I lose my temper or say rude things. (yes, I do that. so dumb.) But, I am relieved to know that in my disparity, it is the knowledge that I am not forgotten by God and He is patient with my slow progression. Some people don't think having a knowledge of God and His divine love for us, matters, but I can promise that it is all that matters to me. Not only am I trying to find the beauty in the little things, but I am in awe of the beauty that is within the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father has provided me a way of life that is exhilarating, inspiring, and motivating. I love my life, even with all it's difficulties. It is a new goal to rejoice in those difficulties and celebrate the small, but unique to me moments. Forget Not to be Happy Now friends.

well Powell this year was incredible to say the least. we seriously were so blessed to be in the company of such wonderful family in such a beautiful place. thanks to mike and deb for letting us join in on all the fun. the best thing was watching our sweet little man with all his cousins. he is going to be heart broken when he wakes up this morning to just the mom. boo. he had the time of his life.

lots of beach time with my baby. i mostly spent it making sure he didn't eat all the sand.

nikson with aunt debbie. deb rocked the air chair all week and made all the boys jealous.

swimming while watching the cliff jumpers. nikson LOVES the water and splashes like a mad man. it is so fun to see him take to things.

Leighton and Nikson became good buds. who isn't good buds with leighton cartwright?

All the kids played on the tube. they are a bunch of wild hyenas.
(charley, claire, afton, emma, and wesley) Drake and Garrett were off hunting lizards.

aunt Stacey needed some good boy bonding time since she is adding one boy to her mix of six gals. nikson makes most people want a child. stace is six months pregnant and on our last night she decided to take advantage of the smooth water and wakeboarded. don't worry stace, i won't post a pic of it. she was concerned about her rump looking big. whatever. she looked great!

could he be any cuter? ahh! i just love him. he loved being on the boat and watching his dad do cool tricks and his mom stay safely inside the wake. most of the time he slept. that smooth lulling was just what we needed for some sweet nap time.

blake caught some massive air this trip. he looked so amazing out there. the little girls kept saying how good he is. i mostly just thought of how good looking he is.

see what i mean. the man is a looker.

the best part of the week was seeing my two guys together. they seriously just get each other and have so much fun. anytime blake was in the water nikson would bounce up and down and try to yell at him. they high- five each other which makes me laugh.

to add to the bounty of the trip, i had tons of great conversations with people i really admire. blake and i learned a lot about how to be good, loving parents. being with everyone really motivated us to be better and to do better. it's not your to-do list that's important, it's your to be list, right leighton? everyone is so dedicated to their families. it is refreshing to know there are people who understand the principle of family. i think sometimes i get too wrapped up in the busy-ness of life to really take time for the important stuff. i am fortunate to have such great examples of love and patience in my life. here's to more experiences like this past week and a better me.

Chevron has been a print that I have loved for years. Zig Zag Baby. I love it. It adds a little spice to your everyday stripes. I would have painted them in the nursery, but alas my love for the print is not as strong as the lack of talent I have for painting. Oh boy. And oh well.

We are off for the WHOLE week to Lake Powell for some desperately needed down time, family time, and sun time. The opacity of my legs is quite frightening. I did not take full advantage of the golden days of summer unfortunately. So we are off, the boy, the man, and me.
